I am motivated to write this article because of numerous calls i do receive on a daily basis from agropreneurs on problems, challenges they faced in this dynamic nature of agricbusiness.
To share from my own knowledge, mistakes and years of experience; to me is unquantifiable in monetary terms which i will be doling out on this thread to my numerous readers.
This is to also help both starters and experienced agro-preneurs on this thread to learn from my own mistakes, experience and then be able to solve their day to day problems being faced on the farm site.
You can make big money and you can also make total loss in any farming business, the bridge that differentiate you from the other people that make money is KNowledge (ability to learn from your own setbacks, from successful entrepreneurs in the industry, and personal development)
I have faced a lot of setbacks in this business from inadequate weather condition which totally reduce the yield of my crops, pests and disease which almost wipe out my investments,Cattle rearers which almost destroy my crops, exploitation from middle men e.t.c
But THE GOOD NEWS is all these challenges can be curbed which i am going to be explaining on this thread so you don't make the same mistakes and you can speed up your own rate of success in no distant time than i did.
1. Farming goes beyond land preparation and planting; how do you perform all other operations which include the managing labourers well ( i will not want to talk more on this because it entails a whole lot but what you need to know is to source for dedicated workers at a very considerable price,i will also advice you get a permanent workers).
A staff should be employed to supervise and monitor the activities of the workers.
2. How do we solve the problem of marketing being faced by entrepreneurs in this business.
I do ask people that comes to me for knowledge to let me know their budget and see what area of the agribusiness they can strategically start from.
Marketing is interconnected with how you start, what crop you start with, and where you start your business from.
If you are starting a 1acre of cassava and you want to make huge profit, you are a joker; the best thing you can do is to sell to the local middlemen at a ridiculous price while if you are starting with as much as 25 acres, you will not have to patronise the.middlemen the revenue you will generate will overshadow the cost of transporting it directly to the processing factory.
You can start with small acreage in cassava if you have a buyer that can pen down to buy at a good fixed price from you.(although i have not seen such and seems next to impossible)
There are some crops that you can start on a very small scale and are still very profitable and are not affected by flunctuation in market price.
Crop such as plantain can be started on a small scale.
My Experience: I notice that people who cultivate small acreage are terribly exposed to market price flunctuation, are forced to sell to the middlemen at ridiculous price and tells you that agribusiness is not profitable e.t.c
You will hear something like cassava do not sell this year o.
3.Farming business is a very dynamic business meaning that it keeps changing everyday.
Dont be surprise if What you know yesterday is obsolete today and knowledge of today is of no significance tomorrow.
I hear some folks say "i have been in this business for donkeys of years, you can.not know more than i do"....i just shake my head and laugh in Japanese
What do you know...if your knowledge of yester years is what you are relying on,then you must be out-of-tune with the latest innovative way of farming....Keep improving on yourself, attend seminars, read more on your area of specialization, share knowledge with like positive minded people.
All aspect of operations from land preparation to production to processing to harvesting keeps evolving.
You have to be an everyday-learner even though you are a learned.
Focus on crop that provide good cash flow.
Taking care of a farm is not all that a smooth road.
All factor of production needs to be combined from land acquisition to labour management to application processes to harvesting and to marketing.
I will be teaching on how you can combine all the factors of production from land acquisition to marketing and ideas that may be useful for you for a successful farming business in subsequent write up.
